Currently Watching
Reservoir Dogs
By Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth
see related

Reservoir Dogs is one of my favorite movies directed by one of my favorite directors(Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill  Volume 1&2, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown). Reservoir Dogs is actually the film he directed which got great reviews and won a few awards. Not too shabby for a guy who didn't take filming school or finish high school.

The movie focusses mostly on 4 characters. Joe Cabot(Lawrence Tierney ) is planning a heist where he will gather well qualified men to steal diamonds. The movie starts off at a restaurant where Joe, Nice Guy Eddie(Chris Penn), Mr. White(Harvey Keitel, Mr. Pink(Steve Buscemi, Mr. Orange(Tim Roth), Mr. Blonde(Micheal Madsen, and Mr. Blue(Edward Bunker are all having coffee. Joe wants them to all go by those names. He doesn't want any of them giving information of their past or who they are so incase of a cop interrogates them they will have little to say especially if there is an inside cop. They talk about Madonna's Like a Virgin song, tipping or not tipping waitresses.

They go to the jewelry store. The heist goes completely wrong within the first few minutes of the movie. Everything went wrong. The cops were already prepared for them. So someone like Mr. Pink believes they were setup. Through the film they try to put a few things that they can together. Mr. Orange is shot and Blue and Brown are dead. Tarantino puts so much detail into the dialogue. The conversations these people share about how heists usually go down is interesting. The characters start to point at one another.

It doesn't take that long to figure out who is the rat. They make it common knowledge to us, but they don't find out till the end. Throughout the movie we get backstories of Mr. White, Mr. Blonde, and Mr. Orange and how they got involved in this heist. These characters are truly different from one another. They all have some personality that makes them different.

By far one of the best scenes and a scene that jump started Taratino's career is when Mr. Blonde played Micheal Madsen interrogates a cop. Actually....it doesn't give many questions. He gets straight to the point and tortures the guy with the song Stuck in the Middle With You in the backround with the radio on. Something about that scene is enjoyable....boy I need help.

Though the movie uses rough language throughout the movie it does use smart dialogue and make you think. The movie doesn't get philosophical, but it does have moments in which you say "Yeah he's right.".  Good movie rent it. Hell just buy it.

Mother's birthday this week along with orientation at Gwynedd Mercy. Applied to the gas station. The produce market hasn't called me back yet.....what a bummer. Police haven't came by to question me yet......strange.

I saw Superman Returns Wednesday. I have to say it was pretty good. It didn't match up to last summer's Batman Begins, but it did out beat some of the worst superhero movies like Daredevil, Elektra, The Hulk, and so on. For some reason most Marvel movies are setup for disaster. Director Bryan Singer(Usual Suspects and the first two X-Men movies) left the X3 project to direct Superman Returns and left Brett Ratner(Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2) to direct X3. Yeah.....Brett Ratner blew it.

After hearing about his home planet and how it might still exist Superman(Brandon Routh) left Earth to find Krypton. After realizing it was gone for good Superman has returned Earth and 5 years have passed since he left. I'm not too sure why it would have taken 5 years. Earth has gone through changes while the son of Krypton has been gone. Over the 5 year peroid the world has forgotten their hero. Some people are still the same such as his mother Martha(Eva Marie Saint, Titantic), the photographer Jimmy Olsen(Sam Huntington, Not Another Teen Movie), and the Editor(Frank Langella, Good Night, and Good Luck).

Lois Lane(Kate Bosworth, Brush Crush) shows a bitterness to Superman as she wrote an article  "Why the world doesn't need Superman" which won a Pulitzer while Superman has gone. Also Superman is surprised to see Lois has a new boyfriend Richard White(James Marsden, X-Men films) nephew of Perry White. Lois has a son as well leaving many questions to viewers throughout the movie. Lois couldn't be any more angry at Superman.

Meanwhile Lex Luthor(Kevin Spacey, American Beauty, L.A. Confidential, Usual Suspects) has escaped from prison thanks to Superman. Maybe Superman should not have left the earth before Lex's court date. By the way this movie picks up where Superman 1 and 2 leave off. It ignores the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Lex's heads to Superman's Fortress of Solitude with his girlfriend Kitty Koslowski(Parker Posey) where he finds more of Superman's past. Using the crystals from the Fortress, Lex can build huge land mass over the Atlantic. With this advanced alien technology....millions will die......actually billions. Lex and Kitty make a great duo. Kitty brings the humor and Lex brings the evil.....with kryptonite.

Superman confronts Lois about his disappearance. In a way to connect with Lois he shares time to fly with her just as he did in the Donner Films. Obviously with the special effects now this is much better. The special effects carry through saving planes, reflecting bullets, and lifting large objects.

As for the acting.....superb for the most part. Brandon Routh doesn't quite match up to Christopher Reeve. He has some of Clark's dorky personality, but not enough. He is a good superman though. Actually I would have liked to see him more as Clark at times. Kate Bosworth as Lois is subpar. She makes it into her Louis, but not an enjoyable one. She lacks the spunky attitude that Margot Kidder had in the Superman films. I know she has been depressed, but sadly this affects her whole personality. Hopefully in future Superman films she will manage to get Lois's character down right. There is some chemistry between Lois and the Man of Steel in this movie.

Kevin Spacey made a great Lex. He gave humor, but he was just evil enough to make him the Lex people will like. He was fun, but not cheesy. Always referring to history and plotting to gain more power Kevin gives energy to the movie. This Lex however doesn't want to be a god. He just wants to "give fire to the people" and get his share of the cut. I just hope his plan next time around is more diabolical. Then again his girlfriend Kitty wouldn't like that as she holds a special place in her heart for Superman.

As for others they all do an exceptional job. Sam has the goofy Jimmy Olsen down as Frank has the bossy editor down too. While she isn't in the movie alot Eva acts as Clark's supportive mother. Marlon Brando who recently passed away gave his voice within the movie as Clark's biological father. He gives a passage of how he has sent his only son to guide the people of the Earth. In many ways, Superman is Jesus.....the Earth's savior. Funny.....never thought of it that way. Interesting.

There is one big twist within the movie. You won't be all that surprised though. Most likely there will be sequels. While this movie doesn't match up to Batman Begins, Spider-Man 2, X2, it is a nice start and could get better with more sequels. A great director knows where he/she went wrong and learn from those mistakes. In any case its great to see Clark Kent, Man of Steel, Superman, w/e you want to call him back on screen after so many years. 2005 had Batman Begins and now 2006 has Superman Returns. Though it was disappointing to see Bryan Singer leave the X-Men 3 project it is great to see the savior of Earth after many years. Where one franchise dies....another one is reborn.

So look up in the sky! Look its a bird, its a plane, no its Superman....or Jesus.

Can Jesus shoot fire out of his eyes? No.....what do you think of that? Jesus: Damn it. He is right. Look I can't go around saving lives 24-7. Get a life Superman.

Lazy week....school work limited....not much to do....maybe see The Omen. I'm kinda tired of everyone saying 6.6.6. What happened to the 200? You can't just take that off and make it 6.6.6.
